Dr. S.M. Balaji, MDS, Ph.D

Council Member, Adviser on Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery

Professor Balaji is presently the Editor-in-Chief of the “Annals of Maxillofacial Surgery” and the Executive Editor of “Indian Journal of Dental Research”. Decorated as a Bio-medical scientist by the association of Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists, Professor Balaji a member of the Indian Council of Medical Research and has been awarded the Brammaiah Sastri Award for ground breaking research findings in the field of reconstructive surgery using novel bone morphogenetic proteins. Professor Balaji was awarded the coveted “Dr. Ginwallah Rolling Trophy” of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India twice and has been the runner up on two occasions by winning the ‘Best Paper Award’ at the Annual conferences. He has also received the “Best Paper Awards” at the World Cleft Congresses conducted at Zurich, Halifax, and Goteborg, Sweden. He has won the “Modus Award of Merit” for presenting the ‘Best Innovative Surgical Technique’ at the 6th Asian Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery held in Tokyo and won the “Gold Medal” for best paper at the 4th Asian Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Richard Baxter

Council Member, Adviser on Minor Surgery

Dr. Baxter obtained his qualifications from the University of Birmingham in 1992 and has 12 years specialist experience as a Dermatological Surgeon at Queen Mary's Hospital, London. He is also a member of St George's Hospital Dermatology and Plastic Surgery MDT. He holds a special interest in Dermatological Surgery, Orthopaedic Medicine and ENT. Dr. Baxter is a lecturer and course organiser in Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery Education. He is also an examiner and contributor for the Diploma in Minor Surgery and involved in the national accreditation of primary care skin surgeons. Dr. Baxter is currently based in GP Principal Ashdown Forest Health Centre, East Sussex.

Prof. Christopher Bentley

Council Member, Adviser on Ophthalmology

Professor Christopher Bentley is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Lead Clinician in Ophthalmology at the Central Middlesex Hospital London. specialising in squint and cataract treatment. He is also a Visiting Professor at Middlesex University and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. He is currently involved in regular surgery for adult and paediatric cataract, adult and paediatric squint (with adjustable sutures) and all aspects of Botulinum Toxin treatment. He is a member of The Royal College of the Ophthalmologists Microsurgical Skills and Paediatric Ophthalmology HST Faculties. He is a Vice-President of the Ophthalmology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He initiated a National Diploma Course (PGDipOphth) at Middlesex University, the special interest being ophthalmology training for GPSIs / Nurse Practitioners / Optometrists / Orthoptists. He acts as a personal mentor to local GPs and Optometrists taking this course.

Mr. Raj Bhutiani

Council Member, Adviser on General Surgery

Specialist experience: General surgery but a major workload of minor skin surgery

and contributor for the Diploma in Minor Surgery.
National profile: Authority on short stay surgery and walk in walk out hernia surgery.

Prof. Philip Bloom

Council Member, Adviser on Ophthalmology

Prof. Bloom is a consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Western Eye and Hillingdon Hospitals. He is an Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at Middlesex University and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. His Main research interests include trans-scleral and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, combined cataract and glaucoma surgery and spectacle independence following cataract surgery. Prof Bloom serves as Chief of Glaucoma Services at Hillingdon Hospital and Service Director and Lead Clinician at Western Eye Hospital. He is also a course leader for Middlesex University’s Post-Graduate Diploma in Ophthalmology and a surgical tutor & microsurgical skills faculty member at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Prof. Bloom received the Keeler Scholarship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists from 1994-1995 and was awarded the Muthusamy Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1990.

Dr. Jonathan Botting

Dr. Brian Clapp

Council Member, Adviser on Cardiology

Dr Clapp attended medical school in Sidney Sussex College Cambridge and University College London and completed his general medical training in various teaching hospitals around the capital. He was awarded a PhD by University of London into the links between inflammation and acute cardiac events; a continued active research interest. He completed specialist training in cardiology at the Heart and London Chest Hospitals and developed a particular interest in coronary and structural intervention. He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2005. He provides a service in both general cardiology and specifically interventional cardiology. He has a specialist interest in hypertension (clinical and research), ischaemic heart disease and stroke prevention (including in divers). He has expertise in all areas of percutaneous coronary intervention, including the physiological and anatomical assessment of lesion severity, and the assessment and closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale.

Dr. Ravi Dasan

Council Member, Adviser on Urgent Care

Dr Ravi Dasan qualified at St Georges Hospital Medical School, London. This was followed by 2 years training on the Guy's Hospital Medical rotation incorporatinng cardiology, emergency medicine and general medicine. Theafter Membership to the Royal College of Physicians was attained. Subsequently specialist training in General Practice and Emergency Medicine was undertaken resulting in membership and fellowship to both the Royal College of General Practitioners and Faculty of Emergency Medicine. His special interests include private and discrete access to emergency care in both the acute and general practice setting. In addition Dr Dasan is available for medico-legal report writing, having gained a Diploma in Law in 2003.

Prof. Ram Dhillon

Council Member, Adviser on ENT

Professor Ram Dhillon FRCS, is a consultant ENT surgeon with the North West London Hospitals NHS Trust and Honorary Professor, School of  Medical & Social Sciences, Middlesex University, London. With over 30 years experience as an ENT and Head & Neck Specialist, he has actively pursued his clinical career and has special interests in sinofacial pain and voice disorders. His other major interest is in medical education and he has developed numerous nationally-accredited initiatives to improve the delivery of patient care. These include postgraduate medical courses for GPs and Nurses (Diabetes, Cardiology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Medicine in the Older Person, Minor Surgery etc), interactive seminars, and eLearning. He edits the "Clinical Focus-Primary Care", which is the official publication of the APWSI. He lectures and presents regularly to PCTs, PBCs, GPs and other organisations such as the "National Association for Primary Care."

Prof. Brian Ellis

Council Member, Adviser on Urology

Professor Brian Ellis was educated at Harrow and St. Mary’s Hospital. He was Consultant Urological Surgeon at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust from 1983 to December 2007; he now consults in primary care at Cobham Hospital. He is Honorary Senior Clinical Research Fellow at St. Mary’s Hospital, Honorary Clinical tutor at the Charing Cross Hospital and visiting Professor at Middlesex University. He has always been passionate about patient safety and implemented ‘human factor’ training for all senior members of staff at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals where he was also Director of Surgery. He was a member of Council of the British Association of Urological Surgeons. His urological interests are the bladder, prostate and scrotum. He was an early advocate of clinicians undertaking diagnostic ultrasound and regularly teaches on courses for other urologists. He is course tutor and examiner for the Postgraduate Diploma in Urology, a course for GPs interested in Urology. He has edited journals, written over 100 peer reviewed papers and was chief editor of Hamilton Bailey’s ‘Emergency Surgery’. His work on Integrated Care Pathways led to an award by the Health Service Journal. In 1998 his team at Ashford won the Urology ‘Team of the Year’ award. He has also won awards for educational video making.

Prof. Mark Emberton

Council Member, Adviser on Urology

Mark Emberton holds the post of Professor in Interventional Oncology at University College London and is Associate Professor at Middlesex University, London.  At UCLH he is Clinical Director of Cancer Services.  He is also Clinical Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His clinical and research interests are focused mainly on diseases of the prostate gland, both benign and malignant. In prostate cancer much of his activity is at present focused on evaluating minimally invasive therapies for localised prostate cancer. This work encompasses the fields of precise characterisation of disease as well as targeting therapies. A current interest includes the non invasive evaluation of men at risk of having prostate cancer. He is also interested in the methodological aspects of clinical research, particularly on the use of alternatives to the randomised control trial in surgery. He is involved in guideline production and appraisal and is interested in the formulation of evidence based management policies. He is an active researcher, lectures widely and has published over 180 peer reviewed articles in numerous scientific journals.  Mark Emberton is a founding Partner of London Urology Associates. He is a Trustee of St Peter’s Trust and Prostate Action.

Dr. Rod Hughes

Council Member, Adviser on Rheumatology

Rod Hughes is the Consultant Rheumatologist. His NHS base is at St. Peter's where he has been a consultant since 1993.
He has significant experience in a wide range of rheumatological diseases and has been instrumental in setting up osteoporosis services in west Surrey. He is a member of the Regional Advisory Board in Osteoporosis and medical advisor to the West Surrey National Osteoporosis group and is actively engaged in researching into osteoporosis and health service provision in rheumatology. He has an academic interest particularly in Compliance and Adherence to medication and has written and published many recent journal papers. He is presently a trustee, on the executive and council of the British Society for Rheumatology and is President of the Rheumatology and Rehabilitation section of the Royal Society for Medicine for the academic year 2005-2006. He was a rugby blue at Oxford and is a keen fly fisherman. He lives in Churt with his wife Alison who is an epidemiologist and two sons.

Dr. Richard Keen

Council Member, Adviser on Rheumatology

Dr Richard Keen graduated from St Mary’s Hospital, London, UK. He trained in general rheumatology, but developed his specialised interest in osteoporosis whilst working at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. During this time he gained his PhD studying the genetic regulation of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Currently, Dr Keen is the Director of the Metabolic Bone Disease Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He also holds a senior lecturer appointment in rheumatology and metabolic bone diseases at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Sciences, University College London. Dr Keen runs a specialist clinic for patients with osteoporosis in the Bone Health Centre. He works closely with the orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists, and believes that this integrated approach to care will ensure patients receive rapid access to the most appropriate management for their osteoporosis. He also sees patients with rarer metabolic bone diseases such as Paget’s disease, rickets, hyperparathyroidism, osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), and fibrous dysplasia.

Dr. Pari-Naz Mohanna

Council Member, Adviser on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Pari-Naz Mohanna is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals. She qualified from United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas' Hospital 1994.

Prof. Tony Narula

Council Member, Adviser on ENT

Tony Narula is a consultant at St marys Hospital, London W2 (part of Imperial healthcare). He was first appointed as a consultant with an interest in ear disorders in 1989 at Leicester Royal Infirmary, moving to London in 2001. He is a Founder Member of the BSO and was elected President by the membership to serve from 2010-12. He is also an elected Council member of the Roya College of Surgeons since 2004, and was re-elected to that role in 2010.

Dr. Chris Roseveare

Council Member, Adviser on Acute Medicine

Dr Roseveare has worked for Southampton University Hospitals Trust since January 2000.One of the first acute medicine consultants to be appointed in the UK, Dr. Roseveare established the Department of Acute Medicine in Southampton in 2000 and led the development of the project resulting in the building of the AMU in 2006. Have overseen the expansion of the acute medicine department which now comprises 5 consultants and 3 specialist registrars. Dr. Roseveare developed the acute medicine training programme in Wessex, and have been programme director for the region as well as Wessex representative on the Specialist Advisory Committee at the Royal College of Physicians. He is also a Founding Member and Treasurer of the Society for Acute Medicine (UK) 2000-2007.

Mr. Francis Vaz

Council Member, Adviser on ENT

Francis Vaz trained at The United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals. Whilst an undergraduate he intercalated a BSc(Hons) in 1991. He qualified as a doctor (MBBS) in 1994 obtaining a distinction in Clinical Therapeutics. He passed his FRCS (Gen) and FRCS (Otol) through the Royal College of Surgeons of England whilst undertaking his Basic Surgical rotation.
Francis’ ENT training was in the South Thames training scheme and he rotated through Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, The William Harvey Hospital (Ashford), The Medway Maritime Hospital and The Royal Sussex County Hospitals (Brighton). During this time he gained an excellent grounding in basic and super-specialist ENT. In his final year Francis undertook a Fellowship training year at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. This prestigious fellowship was a superb finish to an excellent training scheme.
Presently Francis undertakes his NHS practice as an ENT/ Head and Neck Surgical Consultant at the world famous University College London Hospital. He is part of an excellent team that works well and offers a first class service to the patients they treat and also are attached to a superb academic cancer institution.
In his spare time Francis enjoys golf and keeps fit by swimming. He also enjoys playing an active part in family life with his wife and children.
