Abstract

A significant number of patients present to their general practitioner (GP) with manifestations of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. While the urgency of evaluation, treatment and referral may greatly vary depending on the suspected diagnosis, a few principles remain central to all of them. A symptom-based approach enables a practical discussion of the common GI diseases a GP might encounter.
